The hard part in each one is the data: six senses in a dictionary entry, thirty venue sources, species × age × season. Getting that right takes years. Using it should take eight seconds — and then you are back in the book, out on the street, looking at the actual bird.

    A bell that rings five times a day and is silent the rest of it. No streaks, no scores, no history to review. It returns you to the room you are in, and then it is over.

    A course and an identifier for the hardest common birds in Europe. The teaching unit is not the species but the plumage stage — species by age by season. That is exactly why photo-to-species apps break on gulls.
